METLEN, the Greek energy and metals company, has announced a series of battery energy storage system milestones spanning the United Kingdom, Italy, and Greece as it moves to consolidate its position as a significant player in grid-scale storage infrastructure across the continent.
UK Contract with Pulse Clean Energy
The most prominent announcement is a Balance of Plant contract signed with Pulse Clean Energy for the 129MW Penn BESS project located in the West Midlands region of England.
The project carries an installed battery capacity of 362MWh, making it the largest energy storage project METLEN has undertaken in the United Kingdom to date in terms of storage capacity.
Pulse Clean Energy is described as a fast-growing UK developer and operator of battery storage projects. The company currently operates one of the UK's largest battery storage fleets at 400 MWh, with a further 400 MWh under construction and stated ambitions to reach 2GWh of total capacity by 2030.
METLEN's scope of work on the Penn project extends beyond the battery installation itself and includes grid connection works, which the company described as a crucial element in integrating renewable energy into the electricity network. Energisation of the site is expected by the end of 2027.
The Penn project adds to what has become a substantial portfolio of battery storage delivery for METLEN across the United Kingdom. Across the country, the company has delivered or is currently working on approximately 30 battery storage units, including hybrid and collocated solar and battery projects, representing nearly 2GWh of energy storage capacity in collaboration with what METLEN describes as leading industry partners.
Italian Project Financing and Operational Milestone
In Italy, METLEN has secured a USD 21 million long-term financing agreement for a 25 MW and 75 MWh battery energy storage project situated in the Apulia region, specifically in the province of Brindisi. The project has become fully operational within the year and operates under a seven-year physical tolling agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group.
METLEN characterised the long-term financing agreement as one of the first of its type in the Italian energy storage market, and described it as reflecting a commercial model already well established at a European level.
The company has maintained a presence in Italy since 2017 and has since built what it describes as a diversified portfolio in the country, which now includes around 3GWh of energy storage capacity. The Brindisi project represents the latest development in what has been a steady expansion of METLEN's Italian operations over nearly a decade.
Greece's Largest Standalone Battery System
In Greece, METLEN has developed what it describes as the largest standalone battery storage unit planned to date in the country and one of the largest in Europe.
The project was developed in partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies and is located in the Thessaly region. It carries a power capacity of 330 MW with an installed battery capacity of 790 MWh.
The unit's output has been integrated into the national electricity transmission system, which the company described as a key step toward full operational function and participation in grid services.
A separate project has also recently been completed in Polygyros, in the Halkidiki region of Central Macedonia. Known as the Aenaos project, it has a capacity of 48 MW and 96 MWh and was implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, known as Greece 2.0, with funding provided through the European Union's NextGenerationEU programme.
Storage as a Strategic Priority
The cluster of announcements reflects a deliberate positioning by METLEN of battery energy storage not as a secondary or supporting technology within its portfolio, but as what the company calls a critical enabler of the energy transition
In its own framing, battery storage supports renewable energy integration, provides grid flexibility and stabilisation services, strengthens energy security, reduces curtailment and contributes to building a more resilient and reliable power system.
The activity is centred within M RESET, METLEN's energy storage business unit operating under its broader Energy Sector. The announcements span three distinct national markets within Europe, each at a different stage of development and each structured around different commercial and financing frameworks.
In the UK, the Penn contract follows an established pattern of Balance of Plant delivery for third-party developers. In Italy, the Brindisi project introduces a long-term tolling structure that METLEN suggests is novel for that particular market. In Greece, the Thessaly project represents the largest domestic installation of its kind and is now connected to the national transmission system.
The combined activity across the three countries reflects the scale of ambition METLEN has attached to storage infrastructure as European energy systems continue to absorb larger volumes of renewable generation.
