It's hard to imagine a more practical and versatile item than a bomber jacket. The proof is in the models from our selection: from elegant to university and formal

What is a bomber jacket?

A bomber is a short jacket that can be recognized by the elastic bands on the cuffs and waist, a stand-up collar and voluminous sleeves.

One of the varieties is the university bomber: this is a jacket with sleeves of a contrasting color and patches on the chest.

The history of the bomber jacket

The history of the bomber jacket is another example of borrowing. The jacket, originally intended for bomber pilots (hence the name), eventually migrated to the civilian wardrobe. The bomber became a hit of street fashion and became famous in America thanks to the preppy style and university sports teams, which turned the bomber into a cult item.

Today, a bomber jacket is a basic wardrobe item, especially if it is made of leather or coat fabric and lacks flashy decor.

What is the difference between a bomber jacket and a regular jacket?

Jackets designed for pilots are distinguished by their practicality:

  • the cut does not restrict movement;
  • thanks to the elastic bands on the cuffs and waist, cold air does not penetrate into the bomber jacket;
  • The stand-up collar protects from the wind.

All these details are also present on modern bombers as a reminder of their aviation past.

Types of bombers

The first bombers were made of leather, and a little later of nylon and polyester. Today they are made of almost all materials, from cotton to velvet and lace. In addition to the classic cut models up to the waist, shortened and extended models are produced, similar to cocoons. The colors are very different, however, as is the decor: designers boldly decorate the jackets with stripes, voluminous embroidery, decorative stitching and sequins.

Practicality remains the strongest point of these jackets. Thanks to the loose cut, it suits almost everyone, regardless of body type and height, and it is difficult to find something that a bomber jacket would not go with. Jeans, trousers, flowy dresses, joggers, miniskirts and bike shorts the list goes on.

What to wear with a bomber jacket: fashion trends

Elegant

Expensive fabrics and a laconic cut, a calm color and lack of details make a bomber jacket elegant. For example, Daisyknit released a jacket made of Italian knitted fabric Punto Milano with a classic herringbone pattern. A nice bonus is that thanks to the shortened length, it is easy to combine with skirts and high-waisted trousers. Only Me presented a model made of textured drape (a classic coat fabric) in a delicate blue shade, and Present & Simple - from snow-white boucle fabric.

What to wear with: the most obvious solution is to combine an elegant bomber jacket with classic pleated trousers and midi skirts. But you can also experiment: for example, create a stylish look by complementing the bomber jacket with a denim midi skirt and a corset-style long sleeve.

Elongated

The most original variation on the bomber theme. Thus, the Anna Pekun brand released a two-in-one model, reminiscent of a bomber in cut, but possessing the features of a classic trench coat. The loose silhouette allows you to combine the new product with a hoodie or a warm sweater. A similar model in idea can be found at 12STOREEZ - an elongated trench bomber made of Italian cotton can be optionally supplemented with a lining or worn on its own. The upper material is woven from durable and long-lasting cotton, and 100% merino wool was chosen for the lining.

What to wear with: most often, stylists combine elongated bombers with all kinds of trousers - leather, joggers, jeans and leggings. Another option is to wear it with a cozy knitted suit consisting of a pullover and a long skirt.

Made of leather and suede

The most expensive jackets both in price and appearance are made of genuine leather and suede. These same materials make them ideal options for the off-season, when the weather is changeable and unpredictable. Thus, BATS released a model made of nappa. This incredibly soft leather with a grainy texture boasts durability and practicality: it is not sensitive to dirt, moisture-resistant and does not require special care. In search of an original option, look in the Red September showroom the brand released a calfskin jacket with a vintage effect.

What to wear with: We suggest balancing the rebellious spirit of a leather bomber jacket with time-tested classics: black trousers with creases and a cozy knitted cardigan. Pointed-toe shoes will add femininity.

Smart

Black lace and textured tweed, voluminous embroidery and shimmering sequins, a bright and effective print - all these techniques can turn an ordinary bomber into a smart one. You can wear it every day (to lift your mood) or on special occasions (to freshen up your evening look). We especially liked the Selfmade jacket with chaotically scattered sequins on black tweed material. And the Gucci model instead of the thick textile traditional for such things, delicate floral lace was used for sewing it.

What to wear with: on weekdays, combine smart bombers with casual clothes, but for an evening out, you can choose accent pieces. For example, a bomber with silver coating will look great paired with a bodysuit and a leather mini skirt. Accessories include platform shoes and a clutch with glitter, but not a cold metallic one, but a cosmic blue one.

Oversized

Loose fit, dropped shoulders, elongated sleeves there are few things that suit oversize as well as a bomber jacket. The oversized model can be found in almost all brands - each has practiced in exaggerating the size (and beauty). The most voluminous version was definitely presented by pps - the designers "inflated" literally everything, releasing a model in which you definitely won't get lost in the crowd.

What to wear with: in the case of oversized jackets, there are two extremes: wear them with deliberately voluminous items or, conversely, tight ones. If you are ready to experiment, we suggest an unusual combination complement the bomber jacket with lace trousers and a bright elongated striped shirt.

University

A bomber jacket with a distinct character - you can recognize it by its contrasting sleeves, patches and striped elastic bands on the cuffs and waist. They simultaneously refer to both the sporty past and the preppy aesthetics of American universities. Perhaps, the name also suggests another conclusion this is one of the most youthful models, so you should choose it with caution.

What to wear with: having chosen a jacket with a story, you can support this story complement the bomber with a white blouse with a tie and a pleated skirt. Or play on the contrast complement it with feminine trousers and a top with a floral print and the same "girly" accessories: pink high-heeled shoes and a necklace with a heart.
